My Experience Exploring Koh Samui
Choosing the best area to stay in Koh Samui really depends on the type of trip you want. Some parts of the island are packed with beach clubs, nightlife, restaurants, and hotels, while others are much quieter, with luxury resorts, peaceful beaches, and a slower pace of life. Although Koh Samui isn't a huge island, each area feels surprisingly different depending on where you stay.
Over the last few years, I've found myself returning to Koh Samui quite often. One of the things I like most is how easy it is to reach from other parts of Thailand. Whether I'm flying in from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Phuket, the island is well connected and makes a great place to spend a few days relaxing before heading somewhere else.
Most of my own trips have been based around Chaweng. I know there are quieter areas on the island that many people prefer, but I enjoy having the beach, nightlife, restaurants, bars, and beach clubs all within walking distance. Places like ARK Bar are perfect for spending an afternoon by the pool with a few drinks before heading out in the evening. Every now and again I enjoy a proper holiday atmosphere, and Chaweng definitely delivers that.
One of my favourite things to do on Koh Samui is rent a scooter and simply explore the island. Almost every trip ends up involving a full lap around the coastline, stopping at beaches, viewpoints, cafés, and random places that catch my eye along the way. I've visited popular spots like Jungle Club for the incredible views across the island, Overlap Stone, and the famous Hand Viewpoint, which has become one of the classic photo locations on Koh Samui.
I've also used Koh Samui as a base for multiple day trips, including snorkelling tours and trips to Koh Madsum, better known as Pig Island. The island is also a great starting point for travelling onwards to places like Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, which is one reason I often find myself passing through Bangrak and the ferry piers during my trips.
For first-time visitors, Chaweng is usually the easiest choice thanks to its hotels, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and central location. Fisherman's Village is ideal for couples and food lovers, Choeng Mon is perfect for luxury resorts and quieter beaches, while Maenam offers a much slower and more relaxed atmosphere. Chaweng is the busiest and most popular tourist area on Koh Samui. It's home to the island's largest beach, biggest nightlife scene, beach clubs, shopping centres, restaurants, bars, and one of the widest selections of hotels anywhere on the island. If it's your first time visiting Koh Samui and you want everything within easy reach, Chaweng is usually the easiest choice.
Most of my own trips to Koh Samui have been based around Chaweng. I know there are quieter parts of the island, but I enjoy having the beach, restaurants, bars, and nightlife all within walking distance. Bophut / Fisherman's Village
Best For Couples, Restaurants & Boutique Hotels
Bophut is one of the most charming areas on Koh Samui and offers a completely different experience to Chaweng. Instead of beach clubs and nightlife, you'll find boutique hotels, beachfront restaurants, cafés, bars, and the famous Fisherman's Village Walking Street. The atmosphere is more relaxed, making it popular with couples, families, and travellers looking for a quieter side of the island.
One of the things I like most about Fisherman's Village is the atmosphere in the evenings. The beachfront restaurants, night market, and pedestrian-friendly streets make it one of the nicest places to walk around after dark. It feels more relaxed and polished than Chaweng while still having plenty of places to eat, drink, and spend an evening.
Although the beach isn't quite as impressive as Chaweng or Lamai, the overall experience more than makes up for it. Between the restaurants, cafés, boutique hotels, and excellent location on the north coast, many travellers consider Bophut one of the best area to stay in Koh Samui for couples and families.

If you're planning to visit Koh Tao or Koh Phangan during your trip, there's a good chance you'll pass through Bangrak at some point.
I've spent plenty of time around Bangrak over the years, mainly when catching ferries to Koh Tao for scuba diving trips. It's one of those areas that many travellers overlook, but it actually makes a great base if convenience is your priority. You're close to almost everything, making it easy to explore different parts of the island.
Although Bangrak doesn't have the best beach on Koh Samui, it makes up for it with its location. You can easily reach Chaweng, Fisherman's Village, Choeng Mon, Big Buddha, and Wat Plai Laem within a short drive. There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, beach clubs, and hotels scattered along the coastline.
For travellers planning island-hopping adventures or wanting easy access to Koh Samui's main attractions, Bangrak is often considered one of the best area to stay in Koh Samui.
