My Personal Recommendation
If it's your first time visiting Koh Samui, I'd recommend spending at least four or five full days here. While the island isn't as busy as places like Bangkok or Phuket, there's still plenty to see and do. I think Koh Samui is best enjoyed at a slower pace. Spend your mornings relaxing on the beach, head out to explore a temple or viewpoint during the day, then finish the evening with a walk around Fisherman's Village or a few drinks overlooking the sea. It's the sort of place where you don't need to rush to enjoy yourself.
One of the things I love most about Koh Samui is how easy it is to get around. Hiring a scooter and riding around the island is one of the best ways to explore and you'll constantly find somewhere worth stopping, whether that's a quiet beach, a viewpoint, a beach club or just somewhere to grab lunch. Some of my favourite memories have come from doing exactly that, with no real plan other than seeing where the road takes us. One of the attractions that's been at the top of my list for a while now is Pig Island, also known as Koh Madsum. I've been between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao numerous times by boat, but I've somehow never managed to fit this trip into my itinerary. After seeing so many photos and hearing so many good things about it from other travellers, it's definitely something I'll be doing on my next visit. It's not every day you get the chance to spend time on a tropical island where friendly pigs wander freely along the beach, and it's easy to see why this has become one of Koh Samui's most popular day trips.
If you're looking for some of the best things to do in Koh Samui, a trip to Pig Island is one of the most popular experiences available. Located just off the southern coast of Koh Samui, Koh Madsum is a small tropical island best known for the friendly pigs that roam the beach. Most tours combine Pig Island with nearby Koh Tan, where you'll usually have the opportunity to snorkel over coral reefs, swim in clear water or simply relax on quiet white sand beaches. One of my favourite things about Koh Samui is that every beach has its own personality. Whenever I'm on the island, me and my partner usually end up jumping on the scooter and riding around with no real destination in mind, stopping whenever we spot a beach, viewpoint or somewhere that looks worth exploring. That's one of the reasons I enjoy Koh Samui so much. You can spend the morning on one beach, stop somewhere for lunch, then head somewhere completely different in the afternoon without ever travelling very far.
I've spent time at Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon and Maenam. They all offer something a little different. Chaweng has the busiest atmosphere and plenty going on, Lamai feels a bit more relaxed, Choeng Mon is quieter with calm water and Maenam is perfect if you just want to escape the crowds for a while. Rather than choosing one beach and staying there all holiday, I'd definitely recommend exploring a few because they're all worth visiting.

Fisherman's Village is one of those places I always find myself coming back to whenever I'm in Koh Samui. It's got a completely different feel to somewhere like Chaweng, with a much more relaxed atmosphere, especially in the evening. Me and my partner have spent a few evenings wandering through the village, stopping for food, having a drink by the beach and just enjoying the atmosphere. It's one of those places where there's no rush. You can simply stroll along the beachfront, browse the little shops and find somewhere nice to watch the sunset before dinner. If you're staying in Bophut, you're only a short walk away, but even if you're based elsewhere on the island, I'd still recommend making the trip over for an evening.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui, spending an evening exploring Fisherman's Village should definitely be on your itinerary. Located in the heart of Bophut, this charming seaside village is one of the island's most popular places to eat, shop and unwind. Once a traditional fishing village, it's now home to a fantastic mix of restaurants, cafés, boutique shops, beach bars and market stalls, while still holding onto much of its original character. During the day it's a lovely place to grab lunch or enjoy a coffee overlooking the beach, but it really comes alive after sunset when the streets fill with people enjoying the lively atmosphere. Fisherman's Village is located in Bophut on the north coast of Koh Samui, around 15 minutes from Chaweng and approximately 20 minutes from Lamai by scooter or taxi. If you're visiting on a Friday, I'd recommend arriving before sunset as it gets much busier later in the evening when the Walking Street Market begins.
Visit the Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)
The Big Buddha was one of the first temples I visited in Koh Samui and it's somewhere I'd recommend to anyone visiting the island for the first time. Me and my partner stopped here while exploring the island on the scooter and it's well worth taking an hour or so to look around. The 12-metre golden Buddha is impressive when you see it up close and from the top of the steps you get some great views across the coastline. It has a peaceful atmosphere compared to some of the busier tourist spots on the island, making it a nice place to slow down and take everything in.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui, visiting the Big Buddha should be high on your list. Officially known as Wat Phra Yai, this famous temple is home to a 12-metre-tall golden Buddha statue that has become one of Koh Samui's most recognisable landmarks. Built in 1972, the temple sits on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway and attracts visitors from all over the world. As well as admiring the impressive statue, you can explore the temple grounds, browse the small market stalls, enjoy views across the coast and experience an important part of Thailand's Buddhist culture. It's a peaceful place that's suitable for visitors of all ages and is easily one of the best things to do in Koh Samui.

I'd recommend visiting the Big Buddha in the morning when it's a little cooler and before the larger tour groups arrive. Located on the north-east coast of Koh Samui, it's around a 10 - 15 minute drive from both Chaweng and Fisherman's Village, making it easy to reach by scooter, Grab or taxi. Remember to dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees, as this is an active Buddhist temple. If you have a little extra time, it's also worth combining your visit with nearby Wat Plai Laem, which is only a few minutes away and makes for a great morning of sightseeing.
Visit Jungle Club
Jungle Club is one of my favourite places in Koh Samui and somewhere I'd recommend to anyone visiting the island. I went there with one of my best friends when he travelled around Thailand with me for a month before the birth of his first child. We hired a scooter and I drove us up there, which was all part of the experience.
The road to the top is incredibly steep and although I was happy riding up, I completely understand why some people wouldn't want to. At the bottom of the hill there's a small parking area where you can phone the Jungle Club and they'll send one of their 4x4 shuttles to collect you for a small fee. If you're not confident riding a scooter, I'd definitely recommend doing that instead.
Once we got to the top, we grabbed one of the beanbags overlooking the island, ordered a couple of beers and a pizza for lunch and just took in the view for a while. The food was really good, the atmosphere was relaxed and although it's definitely more expensive than your average restaurant in Koh Samui, you're paying for one of the best viewpoints on the island. We both had a great afternoon there and it's somewhere I'd happily go back to every time I'm in Koh Samui.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui, visiting Jungle Club should be high on your list. Perched on the hillside above Chaweng Noi, this famous restaurant and viewpoint has become one of the island's most photographed spots thanks to its incredible panoramic views across the coastline and Gulf of Thailand. While many people come for breakfast, lunch or sunset drinks, it's the relaxed atmosphere that really makes it special. Comfortable beanbags, viewpoints, tropical gardens and a menu of Thai and Western dishes make it the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the scenery. It's a popular spot throughout the day, especially around sunset so I'd recommend booking a table in advance if you want one of the best seats overlooking the island.

Jungle Club is located in the hills above Chaweng Noi, around 10 minutes from Chaweng by scooter or taxi. The road to the top is extremely steep, so if you're not an experienced rider I'd recommend parking at the bottom of the hill and using the Jungle Club's shuttle service instead. It only costs a small fee and is well worth it for the peace of mind. I'd also recommend booking a table in advance, especially if you're planning to visit around lunch or sunset when it can get very busy.
Go Sea Fishing in the Gulf of Thailand
Fishing has always been a big hobby of mine, whether that's spending weekends on the River Stour back home in England or fishing around Chiang Mai whenever I get the chance. During one of my trips around Thailand, I also spent four days at one of the country's best known freshwater fishing venues chasing some incredible fish, so naturally sea fishing has been high on my list for a while now.
Although I haven't managed to do a sea fishing trip in Koh Samui yet, it's something I've looked into a lot and will definitely be booking on my next visit. Spending a day out on the Gulf of Thailand trying to catch species like barracuda, trevally and snapper sounds like the perfect break from the beaches and I love the fact you get to enjoy a day on the water while experiencing a completely different side of the island.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui and fancy something a little different, a sea fishing trip is well worth considering. While most visitors spend their days on the beach or island hopping, heading out into the Gulf of Thailand gives you the chance to catch local species including barracuda, trevally, snapper and other reef fish. My Recommended Fishing Trip
If I was booking a sea fishing trip in Koh Samui, this is the one I'd choose. If you're looking for a good night out in Koh Samui, Chaweng is definitely the place to be. I've had plenty of nights out there and it's somewhere I always enjoy coming back to. Whether it's spending the afternoon and evening at ARK Bar with a few drinks overlooking the beach or wandering between different bars playing winner stays on pool until the early hours, there's always something going on.
One thing I really like about Chaweng is the variety. Every bar has its own atmosphere, so you don't have to stick to one place all night. Some have live music where you can sit back with a drink and relax, while others are much livelier with DJs, dance floors and people partying until the early hours. I've also watched the fire shows on the beach a few times and they're definitely worth stopping for if you're in the area. Even if you're not much of a drinker, Chaweng is still a great place to spend an evening. Walking along the beach at sunset with a cocktail or mocktail before grabbing some dinner is just as enjoyable as the nightlife itself.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui after the sun goes down, experiencing the nightlife in Chaweng should be high on your list. As the island's main nightlife hub, Chaweng offers everything from relaxed beachfront bars and live music venues to lively pubs and nightclubs that stay open into the early hours. ARK Bar is one of the most well known spots on the beach, famous for its beachfront setting, DJs, fire shows and lively atmosphere throughout the day and evening. Just a short walk away, Soi Green Mango is the centre of Koh Samui's late night entertainment, packed with bars, clubs and venues playing everything from live bands to international DJs. Chaweng is located on the east coast of Koh Samui and is easy to reach from most of the island by scooter, Grab, or taxi. The busiest nightlife is centred around ARK Bar, Soi Green Mango and the surrounding streets, all within easy walking distance of each other. If you're planning on having a few drinks, I'd leave the scooter at your hotel and take a taxi or Grab instead.
Relax at a Beach Club
I do love a good beach club when I'm travelling. For me, it's the perfect way to spend a day that's relaxing without feeling like you're wasting it. You can grab a comfortable sunbed, cool off in the pool, have a few drinks, enjoy some good food and listen to music while looking out over the sea. It's a nice change of pace after a few busy days exploring temples, viewpoints and markets. Sometimes it's exactly what you need before heading back out for dinner or a night out, and I always try to fit at least one beach club day into my trips whenever I can.

Nikki Beach
One of Thailand's most famous beach clubs, Nikki Beach is located on the quieter west coast of the island. It's known for its luxury setting, pool parties, beachfront dining and laid back atmosphere overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.
Chi Samui
Situated in Bangrak, Chi Samui offers a more relaxed luxury experience with an infinity pool, excellent food, comfortable day beds and beautiful sea views. It's ideal if you're after a quieter beach club without the bigger party atmosphere.
Take a Day Trip to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park
One trip that's still high on my Koh Samui bucket list is visiting Ang Thong. I've travelled between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao multiple times by boat, but I've never actually taken the time to explore Ang Thong itself. Every time I look at photos or speak to people who've been, it's always one of the first day trips they recommend. The scenery looks incredible, with towering limestone islands, hidden lagoons and some of the best viewpoints in the Gulf of Thailand. It's definitely something I'll be ticking off on my next visit to Koh Samui.

My Recommended Ang Thong Day Trip
If you're planning to visit Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park, this is the tour I'd recommend. It includes everything you'd expect from one of Koh Samui's most popular day trips, with hotel transfers, breakfast, lunch, snorkelling, kayaking and plenty of time to explore the park's most famous attractions. You'll visit the stunning Emerald Lake, snorkel among colourful coral reefs, kayak beneath towering limestone cliffs, relax on beautiful beaches and, if you're up for it, hike to the famous Koh Wua Talap viewpoint for one of the best panoramic views in Thailand. Visit Overlap Stone 2 & the Giant Hand Viewpoint
One place that really surprised me in Koh Samui was Overlap Stone and the Giant Hand Viewpoint. I rode up there on the scooter and although the road gets pretty steep towards the top, it was definitely worth the drive. I grabbed a coffee when I arrived, found a seat overlooking the island, and just spent a while taking in the views. I also managed to get one of the classic photos standing on the Giant Hand, which is probably one of my favourite photos I've taken in Thailand. It isn't as well known as some of Koh Samui's other attractions, but that's exactly why I enjoyed it so much. It felt quieter, more relaxed and offered some of the best views I've seen anywhere on the island.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Koh Samui but want to experience somewhere a little different, Overlap Stone and the Giant Hand Viewpoint are well worth adding to your itinerary. Located high in the hills above Lamai, this attraction combines one of Koh Samui's most famous balancing rocks with a collection of scenic viewpoints overlooking the island and the Gulf of Thailand. The Giant Hand has quickly become one of Koh Samui's most photographed landmarks, offering visitors the chance to stand on a giant sculpted hand that appears to reach out over the mountains. Alongside the photo opportunities, you'll also find a café, viewing platforms and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the scenery. While the road to the top is steep, the panoramic views easily make the journey worthwhile and it's becoming one of the best things to do in Koh Samui for photographers, couples and anyone exploring the island by scooter.

The final stretch of road is steep, so I'd recommend taking your time if you're riding a scooter. If you're not comfortable driving up yourself, taxis and local transport can also get you there. Try to visit on a clear day for the best views and don't forget your camera because this is one of the most photogenic spots on the island.
