Best day trips from Bangkok

My Top Pick for a Day Trip From Bangkok

If I had to choose just one day trip from Bangkok, I'd recommend Ayutthaya Historical Park. There are some incredible places to explore outside the capital but I think Ayutthaya offers one of the best combinations of history, culture and sightseeing without spending most of your day travelling. It's a great opportunity to experience a completely different side of Thailand, especially after spending a few days exploring Bangkok's busy streets, shopping centres and markets.

What makes Ayutthaya stand out is how much you can experience in a single day. It's a destination that suits plenty of different travellers, whether you're visiting Thailand for the first time, travelling as a couple or simply looking for somewhere interesting beyond the city. It's also relatively straightforward to reach, with organised tours making the experience even easier.

Of course, it depends on what you're looking for. Erawan National Park is a fantastic choice for waterfalls and nature, while Khao Yai National Park is ideal for wildlife and hiking. If you'd prefer something closer to Bangkok, Bang Krachao offers a peaceful escape from the city.

However, for a first day trip from Bangkok, I think Ayutthaya is the strongest all round choice. It offers plenty to see, a fascinating look into Thailand's history and a memorable experience without needing to travel too far from the capital.

My Favourite Day Trips From Bangkok

From ancient temples and traditional floating markets to beautiful waterfalls, national parks and tropical islands, there's so much to explore beyond Bangkok itself. These are six of the best day trips from Bangkok that I think are worth adding to your itinerary. Each destination offers something a little different, whether you're interested in history, nature, local culture or simply escaping the busy city for a day.

Ayutthaya Historical Park, Best day trips from Bangkok, where to stay in Thailand Ayutthaya Historical Park, Best day trips from Bangkok, where to stay in Thailand

Ayutthaya Historical Park

Ayutthaya is one of the most popular day trips from Bangkok and a great place to discover more about Thailand's fascinating history. Located around 80 kilometres north of the capital, this ancient city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam and is now home to some of the country's most impressive temple ruins.

The historical park is filled with ancient temples, towering chedis and beautiful Buddhist architecture. One of the most famous sights is Wat Mahathat, where a Buddha head sits surrounded by the roots of a tree. Other highlights include Wat Chaiwatthanaram, with its impressive riverside setting and Wat Phra Si Sanphet, once one of the most important temples in the ancient capital.

Ayutthaya is a great choice if you enjoy history, photography and exploring cultural attractions. The main temples are spread across the city, so joining a guided tour from Bangkok is an easy way to visit multiple famous sites in one day while learning more about their history.

Recommended Tour

This guided tour takes around 9 to 9.5 hours and visits Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat. Transport and a local guide are included, while entrance fees depend on the option selected.

πŸ“ Planning to Visit Yourself?

If you'd prefer to explore Ayutthaya independently, it's easy to reach from Bangkok by train or car. Once you arrive, you can rent a bicycle, hire a tuk tuk or arrange your own transport between the temples. The main historical sites are spread across the city, so it's worth planning which ones you want to visit before setting off. I'd recommend starting with Wat Mahathat and exploring the surrounding ruins before heading to some of the larger temples further away.

Maeklong Railway Market and Floating Market, Best day trips from Bangkok, where to stay in Thailand

Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market are two of the most unique places to visit on a day trip from Bangkok. Located southwest of the capital, these famous markets offer a completely different experience from the busy shopping centres and street markets found in the city.

Maeklong Railway Market is famous for its stalls set directly alongside an active railway track. Several times a day, a train passes through the middle of the market, with vendors quickly pulling back their umbrellas and goods before returning everything to normal once it has passed. It's an incredible sight and one of the most unusual market experiences in Thailand.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is known for its colourful wooden boats, traditional canals and vendors selling food, fresh fruit and souvenirs from the water. Although it's a popular tourist attraction, taking a longtail boat through the surrounding canals is a great way to experience the area. Visiting both markets in one day is a fantastic option if you're looking for something different from Bangkok's temples and city attractions.

πŸ“ Location
Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi provinces, southwest of Bangkok

⏱ Time Needed
Around 8 to 9 hours for both markets

πŸ’° Cost
Budget to moderate, depending on transport and boat rides

πŸš— Getting There

⭐ Best For
Markets, photography, local food and cultural experiences

βœ… Don’t Miss
Watching the train pass through Maeklong and taking a longtail boat through the canals

Recommended Tour

This 8.5 hour guided tour combines both markets with a train journey through Maeklong Railway Market and a longtail boat ride through the canals to Damnoen Saduak. You'll have time to explore both markets, browse the stalls and try local food.

πŸ“ Planning to Visit Yourself?

If you'd prefer to visit the markets independently, it's possible to reach both from Bangkok using public transport or a private driver. Maeklong Railway Market is around 80 kilometres southwest of Bangkok, while Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a further 20 kilometres away. I'd recommend visiting Maeklong first and checking the train times before you travel, as watching the train pass through the market is the main attraction. From there, you can continue to Damnoen Saduak and arrange a longtail boat ride through the canals. Both markets are popular with tourists, so arriving earlier in the day is usually a good idea.

Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park, Best day trips from Bangkok, Where to stay in Thailand

Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park

Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park make one of the most exciting day trips from Bangkok, combining beautiful natural scenery with some of Thailand's most important historical attractions. Located west of the capital, Kanchanaburi is known for its peaceful riverside surroundings, wartime history and easy access to the stunning waterfalls of Erawan National Park.

One of the main attractions is the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, which forms part of the historic Death Railway built during the Second World War. Visitors can also explore the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and learn more about the prisoners of war who suffered during its construction. It's an important part of Thailand's history and adds a completely different experience to the day.

Erawan National Park is another highlight, famous for its beautiful seven tiered waterfall surrounded by tropical forest. The waterfalls are known for their clear turquoise pools, with numerous areas suitable for swimming when conditions allow. You can follow the walking trails through the forest, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and explore different levels of the waterfall.

Combining Kanchanaburi and Erawan National Park makes for a long but rewarding day trip from Bangkok. It's a fantastic choice if you enjoy nature, waterfalls and history, especially if you want to experience more than one side of Thailand in a single day.

πŸ“ Location
Kanchanaburi Province, west of Bangkok

⏱ Time Needed
Full day, around 12 to 14 hours from Bangkok

πŸ’° Cost
Moderate. Transport, national park fees and meals vary

πŸš— Getting There
Guided day tour / Private car from Bangkok

⭐ Best For
Waterfalls, swimming, nature and wartime history

βœ… Don’t Miss
Erawan Waterfall, Bridge over the River Kwai and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

Recommended Tour

This guided day trip combines Kanchanaburi's historical attractions with a visit to Erawan National Park. You'll visit the Bridge over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and Kanchanaburi Skywalk before continuing to the famous Erawan Waterfall.

There's time to explore the waterfall trails and swim in permitted areas, making it a great option for visitors who want to combine history and nature without organising all the transport themselves.

The tour takes approximately 12 to 14 hours, with national park entrance fees and hotel transfers depending on the booking option.

πŸ“ Planning to Visit Yourself?

If you'd prefer to explore independently, you can reach Kanchanaburi from Bangkok by train, bus or private car. However, Erawan National Park is located around 65 kilometres further north of Kanchanaburi town, so visiting both destinations in one day requires an early start and careful planning. I'd recommend using a private driver or renting a car if you want to explore at your own pace, as public transport can make the journey quite time consuming. Try to arrive at Erawan Waterfall early enough to enjoy the walking trails and swimming areas before heading back towards Bangkok.

Khao Yai National Park, Best day trips from Bangkok, where to stay in Thailand

Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai National Park is one of the best day trips from Bangkok for anyone who enjoys nature, wildlife and exploring the outdoors. Located northeast of the capital, this enormous national park is known for its tropical forests, beautiful waterfalls and incredible variety of wildlife. It's a completely different experience from Bangkok's busy streets and a great opportunity to discover Thailand's natural beauty.

One of the biggest attractions is the chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat. Khao Yai is home to wild elephants, deer, gibbons and many species of birds, although sightings are never guaranteed. The park also has multiple walking trails that take visitors through dense forests and open grasslands, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Another highlight is the park's impressive waterfalls, including Haew Suwat Waterfall and Haew Narok Waterfall. Haew Suwat is particularly famous for its beautiful jungle setting, while Haew Narok is one of the largest waterfalls in the park. Both are popular stops for visitors exploring Khao Yai and offer some fantastic photography opportunities.

Khao Yai is an excellent choice if you're looking for adventure, hiking and a break from city life. Although it's a fairly long day trip from Bangkok, the combination of wildlife, waterfalls and beautiful scenery makes it well worth considering, especially if you enjoy spending time outdoors.

πŸ“ Location
Nakhon Ratchasima Province and surrounding provinces, northeast of Bangkok

⏱ Time Needed
Full day, around 10 to 12 hours from Bangkok

πŸ’° Cost
Moderate. National park entrance fees and transport vary

πŸš— Getting There

βœ… Don’t Miss
Haew Suwat Waterfall, Haew Narok Waterfall and wildlife spotting

Recommended Tour

This guided day trip takes approximately 11 hours and explores some of Khao Yai National Park's most beautiful natural attractions. You'll visit the Nong Phak Chi Nature Trail, where there's a chance to spot local wildlife, before continuing to Haew Suwat Waterfall and Lam Ta Khong Campground, an area where deer are often seen.

The tour also includes a visit to Haew Narok Waterfall, giving you the opportunity to experience two of the park's most impressive waterfalls in one day. With transport and a guide arranged, it's a convenient way to explore Khao Yai without needing to drive yourself.

National park entrance fees and hotel pickup depend on the booking option, while meals are not included. Swimming is not permitted at the waterfalls.

πŸ“Planning to Visit Yourself?

If you'd prefer to visit Khao Yai National Park independently, renting a car or arranging a private driver is one of the easiest ways to explore. The park is around three hours from Bangkok, depending on traffic and the main attractions are spread across a large area. I'd recommend leaving Bangkok early to make the most of your day and planning which waterfalls and walking trails you want to visit beforehand. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the roads and remember that animals can be unpredictable, so always maintain a safe distance and follow the park's rules.

Bang Krachao

Bang Krachao is one of the best day trips from Bangkok if you're looking to escape the busy streets and enjoy a quieter side of Thailand. Often called Bangkok's Green Lung, this peaceful area sits across the Chao Phraya River and is filled with tropical greenery, quiet cycling paths and small local communities. Despite being so close to the capital, it feels completely different from the surrounding city.

One of the best ways to explore Bang Krachao is by bicycle. The area has a network of peaceful roads, narrow pathways and elevated walkways that take you through lush vegetation and traditional neighbourhoods. Along the way, you can discover small local shops, enjoy traditional Thai snacks and experience a slower pace of life away from Bangkok's traffic and crowded attractions.

Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park is another highlight, offering beautiful green surroundings, peaceful ponds and shaded areas to relax. The surrounding mangrove habitats are also home to local wildlife, including monitor lizards and a variety of birds. It's a great place to enjoy nature without travelling several hours outside Bangkok.

Bang Krachao is particularly appealing if you enjoy cycling, photography and exploring places beyond the usual tourist attractions. Unlike some of the longer day trips from Bangkok, you can comfortably explore the area in half a day, making it a fantastic option if you want to enjoy something different while still having time to explore the city afterwards.

πŸ“ Location
Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan Province, across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok

⏱ Time Needed
Around 3 to 5 hours

πŸ’° Cost
Budget friendly. Bicycle rental, ferry and refreshments are generally inexpensive

πŸš— Getting There
Ferry from Bangkok, followed by bicycle rental / Guided cycling tour

⭐ Best For
Cycling, nature, couples and escaping the city

βœ… Don’t Miss
Jungle cycling paths, mangrove boardwalks and Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park

Recommended Tour

This four hour guided cycling tour is a fantastic way to explore Bang Krachao without needing to organise everything yourself. Starting at Wat Khlong Toei Nok Pier, you'll cross the Chao Phraya River by boat before collecting your bicycle and heading into the area's peaceful tropical surroundings.

The route takes you along quiet roads, jungle pathways and elevated mangrove boardwalks, with opportunities to spot monitor lizards and other local wildlife. You'll also visit Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, where you can relax by the water and feed the fish, before returning to Bangkok by boat.

The tour includes a bicycle, helmet, boat crossings, an English speaking guide, local snacks, drinks and entrance fees. Groups are limited to eight people and the cycling route is mostly flat and suitable for anyone comfortable riding a bicycle.

πŸ“ Planning Your Visit?

If you'd prefer to explore Bang Krachao independently, you can take a small ferry across the Chao Phraya River from Wat Khlong Toei Nok Pier. Once you arrive, bicycle rentals are available in the area, making it easy to explore the quiet roads and green surroundings at your own pace. I'd recommend visiting earlier in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day and allowing a few hours to cycle around the area. Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park is a great place to stop along the way and there are plenty of small local shops where you can take a break and grab something to eat or drink.

Pattaya, Koh Larn and Sanctuary of Truth, Best day trips from Bangkok, where to stay in thailand

Pattaya, Koh Larn and Sanctuary of Truth

Pattaya and Koh Larn offer one of the best day trips from Bangkok for visitors looking to escape the city and spend some time by the sea. Located southeast of the capital, Pattaya is a popular coastal destination known for its beaches, lively atmosphere and nearby tropical islands. Although it's a longer journey from Bangkok, it's a great option if you want to combine sightseeing with a relaxing beach experience.

One of the main highlights is Koh Larn, also known as Coral Island which sits just off the coast of Pattaya. The island is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, clear turquoise water and opportunities for swimming and water activities. Visitors can reach the island by ferry or speedboat from Bali Hai Pier, making it possible to enjoy a few hours relaxing by the sea before returning to the mainland.

Another attraction worth visiting is the Sanctuary of Truth, an enormous wooden structure overlooking the coastline in North Pattaya. The sanctuary is covered in incredibly detailed carvings inspired by Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, with traditional craftsmanship displayed throughout the building. It's one of the most impressive architectural attractions in the area and offers a completely different experience from the beaches nearby.

Combining Pattaya, Koh Larn and the Sanctuary of Truth makes for a busy but memorable day trip from Bangkok. It's an excellent choice for travellers who want to experience Thailand's tropical beaches without travelling to the southern islands, while still enjoying some interesting sightseeing along the way.

πŸ“ Location
Pattaya, Chonburi Province, around 150 km southeast of Bangkok

⏱ Time Needed
Full day, around 11 to 13 hours from Bangkok

πŸ’° Cost
Moderate. Transport, boat tickets, entrance fees and activities vary

πŸš— Getting There
Bus / Private car / Organised tour to Pattaya, followed by a boat to Koh Larn

⭐ Best For
Beaches, swimming, island trips and sightseeing

βœ… Don’t Miss
Koh Larn beaches, Sanctuary of Truth and Pattaya Viewpoint

Recommended Tour

This 12 hour guided day trip combines some of Pattaya's most popular attractions with a visit to the beautiful island of Koh Larn. Starting from Bangkok, you'll travel to the Sanctuary of Truth, where you can explore the impressive wooden architecture and learn about the traditional craftsmanship and beliefs behind its detailed carvings.

After visiting the sanctuary, you'll continue to Bali Hai Pier and take a speedboat across to Koh Larn. Here, you'll have around three and a half hours to enjoy the beaches, swim in the sea or relax by the water. Optional activities such as snorkelling and parasailing may also be available at an additional cost.

Before returning to Bangkok, the tour stops at Pattaya Viewpoint, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding city. Transport and a guide are arranged, making it a convenient way to experience multiple different attractions in one day.

The Sanctuary of Truth entrance fee and Koh Larn boat ticket depend on the booking option selected. Meals, beach chairs and water activities are generally additional expenses.

πŸ“Planning to Visit Yourself?

If you'd prefer to explore independently, you can reach Pattaya from Bangkok by bus, private car or taxi. The journey usually takes around two to three hours depending on traffic, so I'd recommend leaving early if you want to visit both Koh Larn and the Sanctuary of Truth in one day. Boats to Koh Larn depart from Bali Hai Pier, with regular ferries and faster speedboat options available. Once you've enjoyed some time on the island, you can return to Pattaya and visit the Sanctuary of Truth before heading back to Bangkok. Keep in mind that these attractions are in different parts of Pattaya, so you'll need to allow enough time for travelling between them.

From choosing the right neighbourhood to discovering temples, markets, restaurants and local attractions, these guides will help you make the most of your time in Bangkok.

What are the best day trips from Bangkok?

Some of the best day trips from Bangkok include Ayutthaya Historical Park, Maeklong Railway Market, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Kanchanaburi, Erawan National Park and Khao Yai National Park. For something different, Bang Krachao offers peaceful cycling routes, while Pattaya and Koh Larn are great options for beaches and island activities.

Ayutthaya Historical Park is one of the best day trips from Bangkok for first time visitors. The ancient city is around 80 kilometres north of the capital and offers beautiful temple ruins, fascinating history and impressive architecture. It's relatively easy to reach and can be explored independently or with a guided tour.

Yes, Ayutthaya is one of the easiest and most popular day trips from Bangkok. The journey typically takes around 1 to 2 hours each way, depending on your transport. You can travel by train, private car or organised tour, with most visitors allowing a full day to explore the historical temples and attractions.

Khao Yai National Park and Erawan National Park are two of the best day trips from Bangkok for nature lovers. Khao Yai is famous for its wildlife, hiking trails and waterfalls, while Erawan is known for its beautiful turquoise pools and forest scenery. Both require a full day of travelling and exploring.

Yes, visiting a floating market is one of the most popular day trips from Bangkok. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is known for its colourful boats, traditional canals and local food stalls. Many guided tours combine the floating market with Maeklong Railway Market, allowing you to experience both attractions in one day.

Some of the best day trips from Bangkok without a car include Ayutthaya, Bang Krachao and the floating markets. Destinations such as Kanchanaburi, Erawan National Park and Khao Yai involve longer journeys, so having transport and an itinerary arranged can make the experience much easier. For closer destinations, exploring independently is also a good option.

I'd recommend allowing at least 4 to 5 days in Bangkok if you want to explore the city and enjoy one or two day trips. This gives you time to visit Bangkok's main attractions while setting aside a full day for somewhere like Ayutthaya or the floating markets. If you're planning several of the best day trips from Bangkok, staying for a week or longer will give you more flexibility.
