Which Area Should You Stay In?
From Old Town temples to Nimman cafés and Riverside luxury hotels, here’s a quick breakdown of the best areas to stay in Chiang Mai.
Old Town
The best area for first-time visitors with temples, cafés, markets and easy walking around Chiang Mai.
Nimman
Modern Chiang Mai filled with cafés, coworking spots, rooftop bars and digital nomad life.
Riverside
Relaxing riverside hotels, cocktail bars and luxury stays beside the Ping River.
Night Bazaar
Busy night markets, shopping, food stalls and nightlife in the heart of Chiang Mai.
Old Town
Best For First-Time Visitors
Old Town is still the best area to stay in Chiang Mai for most first-time visitors. Temples, cafés, markets and hotels are all within walking distance, making it one of the easiest areas in the city to explore.
This is where I originally stayed on my first Chiang Mai trip and I still recommend it to most people visiting for the first time. These days I spend more time around Nimman and Riverside, but Old Town is still the classic Chiang Mai experience.
