My Experience Exploring Phuket
Choosing the best area to stay in Phuket really depends on the type of trip you want. Phuket is a much bigger island than many first-time visitors expect, and each part of the island feels completely different. Some areas are packed with nightlife, beach clubs, and busy tourist streets, while others are more focused on relaxed beaches, local cafés, luxury resorts, and slower island life.
Phuket was actually the very first place I ever stayed in Thailand. I arrived from England as a backpacker and checked into a hostel just a short walk from the beach. Most days I would head down to the sand, grab a few beers, watch the sunset, and enjoy the fact I was finally in Thailand after dreaming about it for years.
One of my favourite memories from that first trip was renting a scooter with someone I met at the hostel and spending days exploring the island. We visited viewpoints all over Phuket, rode up to the Big Buddha, discovered smaller beaches away from the crowds, and spent hours just driving around seeing where the roads would take us. It gave me a much better understanding of how different each part of Phuket really is.
Since then, I've stayed in several parts of the island and had completely different experiences in each one. Patong is unlike anywhere else in Phuket, with busy streets, bars, beach clubs, and nightlife that goes on until the early hours. On the other hand, I still love wandering around Old Town Phuket, exploring the colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, stopping at cafés, and enjoying a side of the island that many visitors never see. Old Town is also where I caught the boat to Ao Nang on one of my trips, so it always stands out as a memorable part of Phuket for me.
For first-time visitors, I usually recommend choosing your area based on the type of holiday you want rather than simply booking the cheapest hotel. Old Town Phuket is one of my favourite places to walk around anywhere in Thailand. The colourful buildings, small cafés, local restaurants, and historic streets give it a completely different feel from the beach areas found elsewhere on the island.
