Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
If you're looking for the best things to do in Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep should be right at the top of your list. Sitting high on Doi Suthep mountain, this is one of Northern Thailand's most important and respected temples. The golden chedi is the centrepiece of the temple complex, while the surrounding courtyards are filled with beautifully decorated shrines, Buddha statues, bells, and traditional Lanna architecture that make it one of the most impressive temples in the country.
Getting to the temple is all part of the experience. The winding mountain road offers fantastic scenery before you arrive at the famous 306-step Naga staircase, guarded by two impressive serpent sculptures. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with incredible panoramic views over Chiang Mai, especially on a clear day. Whether you're interested in Thai culture, photography, or simply want to experience one of the city's most iconic landmarks, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a place that shouldn't be missed.

Explore Chiang Mai Old Town
One of my favourite things to do in Chiang Mai is simply parking the car outside Chiang Mai Old Town and spending a few hours wandering around with no real plan. Me and my partner love exploring the streets, stopping at little cafés for an iced coffee, browsing local shops, and grabbing something to eat whenever we find somewhere that catches our eye. There always seems to be something new to discover, and that's what makes Chiang Mai Old Town such a great place to spend a relaxed afternoon. If you're visiting during the middle of the day, I'd definitely recommend carrying a small umbrella for some shade. As someone who's fair-skinned with ginger hair, I know just how strong the Thai sun can be, and it's an easy way to stay comfortable while exploring on foot.
Chiang Mai Old Town is home to some of the city's most famous temples, including Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Chiang Man. Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
One of the highlights of my first trip to Chiang Mai and Thailand as a whole, was visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary. It was the first time I'd ever seen elephants in person and they're even more incredible than I imagined. Watching these gentle animals roam freely, feed and interact with each other was something I'll never forget. Since then, I've visited several ethical elephant sanctuaries in different parts of Thailand, and every experience has been just as memorable. Unfortunately, I've also unknowingly stopped at an unethical elephant attraction near Lampang while taking a break from driving and it was genuinely upsetting to see how the elephants were being treated. That experience made me appreciate even more how important it is to choose an ethical sanctuary where the animals welfare comes first.
If you're planning to visit elephants during your time in Chiang Mai, I strongly recommend choosing a reputable ethical sanctuary. The best experiences focus on observing the elephants in a natural environment, learning about their stories and supporting their ongoing care rather than offering rides or performances. Many sanctuaries also provide opportunities to feed the elephants and walk alongside them while experienced guides explain their behaviour and the conservation work being carried out. It's an unforgettable experience and in my opinion, one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai.

Choosing the right elephant sanctuary is one of the most important parts of your trip. I'd recommend browsing the available tours, reading recent reviews, and choosing an experience that focuses on observing, feeding, and caring for rescued elephants rather than riding or performances. Ethical standards can change over time, so it's always worth doing a little research before booking.
Experience the Sunday Walking Street Market
One of my favourite things to do in Chiang Mai is spending Sunday evening walking along the Sunday Walking Street Market. Me and my partner love taking our time browsing all the different stalls, picking up a few souvenirs, and stopping whenever we spot something good to eat. There are so many food vendors that it's impossible to leave hungry, and I always end up trying something different each visit. During my very first trip to Chiang Mai, I even bought my mum a beautiful handmade dress from one of the clothing stalls, which she still has today. You'll also come across an entire street lined with foot massage stalls, where dozens of therapists offer affordable massages if your feet need a break after all the walking. If you're planning to visit, I'd recommend arriving before 7:00 pm if possible. After that it gets incredibly busy, and depending on the time of year the combination of crowds and heat can become a bit overwhelming. As someone who struggles with the heat, especially during the hotter months, I definitely notice the difference later in the evening.
The Sunday Walking Street Market takes place every Sunday afternoon and evening along Ratchadamnoen Road, stretching from Tha Phae Gate all the way to Wat Phra Singh. Most stalls are set up by around 5:00 pm, although the road closes and vendors begin arriving from around 4:00 pm, with the market continuing until around 11:00 pm. Hundreds of local vendors sell everything from handmade crafts and clothing to artwork, jewellery, souvenirs, and local products. Some of the best food can be found around the temple grounds, where you'll discover dedicated food areas with plenty of local dishes and desserts to try. There are also small tables and stools dotted around the market where you can stop to eat. They aren't the most comfortable if you're tall like me, but they're perfect for grabbing a quick bite before continuing to explore. If you're looking for one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai on a Sunday evening, this market shouldn't be missed.

Visit the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is somewhere I find myself visiting regularly, especially as the Muay Thai stadium is located nearby. Quite often fighters from my gym compete there, so I'll head down to watch, support them, or even help corner on fight night. Me and my partner also enjoy visiting even when there's no Muay Thai, simply to wander around the market, grab some food, and enjoy the evening atmosphere. There are plenty of bars with live music and pool tables if you fancy stopping for a drink, making it a great place to spend a relaxed evening after a day of sightseeing.
Located along Chang Klan Road, the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is open every evening and offers a completely different experience to the Sunday Walking Street Market. You'll find hundreds of stalls selling clothing, souvenirs, handmade crafts, artwork, and gifts, alongside food courts serving both Thai and international dishes. It's easy to spend a few hours browsing the shops, trying different street foods, and soaking up the lively atmosphere. Whether you're looking for souvenirs to take home, somewhere to enjoy dinner, or simply somewhere to experience Chiang Mai after dark, the Night Bazaar is one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai.

Explore Nimman
Nimman is one of the areas I visit most in Chiang Mai, whether it's to get some work done, meet up with my partner, or simply spend a relaxed afternoon. We love wandering around One Nimman, which has a great atmosphere and plenty of places to stop for a coffee, a soft drink, or something stronger later in the evening. There are cafés on almost every corner, making it one of my favourite places to work for a few hours before exploring the area. It's also home to my favourite restaurant in Chiang Mai, a small local chicken restaurant that I always recommend to friends and family when they visit. One of the things I love most about Nimman is the variety of food available, with everything from authentic local Thai restaurants to popular Western cafés, brunch spots, steakhouses, and international cuisine all within walking distance. Once the sun goes down, Nimman comes alive with stylish cocktail bars, relaxed pubs, rooftop venues, and a few nightclubs if you're looking for a bigger night out. If the weather gets too hot, which it often does, Maya Lifestyle Shopping Centre is the perfect place to cool down while browsing the shops or grabbing something to eat.
Nimman, also known as Nimmanhaemin, is Chiang Mai's modern neighbourhood and is especially popular with digital nomads, students, and younger travellers thanks to its café culture, boutique shopping, and lively nightlife. One Nimman is the heart of the area, with independent shops, restaurants, seasonal markets, and regular events throughout the year, while Maya Lifestyle Shopping Centre offers six floors of shopping, dining, entertainment, and a rooftop viewpoint. The surrounding streets are packed with coffee shops, local boutiques, art galleries, and some of Chiang Mai's best restaurants, making Nimman one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai if you're looking for a more modern side of the city.

Watch Muay Thai
Watching Muay Thai is something I think everyone should experience at least once while visiting Thailand. Since living in Chiang Mai, I've been training at a local Muay Thai gym around five to six sessions every week and have also trained at various different gyms in the area. It's given me a real appreciation for the sport and the respect people have for it here. I've spent plenty of evenings supporting teammates at local stadiums and even had the opportunity to help corner one of their fights after being part of his training camp, which was an incredible experience and made me feel genuinely involved. Whether you're already interested in combat sports or have never watched a fight before, the atmosphere inside a Thai stadium is something that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it yourself.
Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport and plays an important role in the country's culture and traditions. Visit Grand Canyon Water Park
If you're looking for something completely different, Grand Canyon Water Park is one of the most fun days out I've had in Chiang Mai. I visited with my partner and one of my friends and her now fiancé while they were travelling around Southeast Asia, and we had an absolute laugh from start to finish. We spent most of the day on the huge inflatable obstacle course, which is much harder work than it looks but great fun. One of the highlights was the giant inflatable launch pillow, where two people jump on one end to send someone flying into the water. I ended up covered in bruises afterwards, but it was definitely worth it and is still one of my favourite memories from Chiang Mai.
Located around 20 minutes south of Chiang Mai, Grand Canyon Water Park offers something completely different from the city's temples, markets, and cafés. Alongside the massive inflatable water park, you'll also find a wakeboarding cable park, zip line, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming areas, and a restaurant overlooking the water. It's a fantastic choice for families, couples, groups of friends, or anyone wanting to cool off from the Thai heat while enjoying an action-packed day.
