My Personal Recommendation
If it’s your first time visiting Krabi, I’d recommend spending at least four or five full days here. There are so many of the best things to do in Krabi spread between the mainland, beaches and surrounding islands that I think rushing through in two or three days means missing a lot of what makes the area special.
I’d personally use Ao Nang as your main base. I’ve stayed there on multiple trips and it makes exploring incredibly easy. You can spend one day on the Four Islands Tour, take a longtail boat over to Railay Beach the next, hire a scooter and explore the viewpoints around Krabi, then mix in kayaking, beaches and an evening around Ao Nang without constantly changing hotels.
Railay is the one place I really wouldn’t miss. It’s still one of my favourite places I’ve visited anywhere in Thailand and even if you don’t stay overnight, I’d make time for at least a full day there. The limestone cliffs, beaches, little bars and overall atmosphere are completely different from Ao Nang and easily make it one of the best things to do in Krabi.
I also wouldn’t try to squeeze every attraction into one trip. I’ve visited Krabi multiple times and there are still things on this list I haven’t got around to, including Hong Island and Tiger Cave Temple. Pick the experiences that suit you, leave yourself some time to explore without a plan and you’ll probably enjoy Krabi much more than trying to tick off everything in a few days.

Four Islands Tour
I did the Four Islands Tour with one of my best friends when he came out to visit me in Thailand before the birth of his first child. Rather than joining one of the bigger group tours, we decided to spend a little more and take a private boat for the day and it ended up being one of my favourite days we had together. Having the boat to ourselves meant we could work around our own time, explore the islands without constantly watching the clock and stop for some snorkelling along the way.
Getting back to Railay was a big part of the day for me as well. I’d stayed there during my first trip around Thailand and it had become one of my favourite places in the country, so I really wanted to take my friend there and show him why I kept talking about it. Being able to combine Railay with the islands, snorkelling and a full day out on the water is why I think the Four Islands Tour is easily one of the best things to do in Krabi.
The Four Islands Tour is one of Krabi’s classic boat trips, usually taking you around Poda Island, Chicken Island, Tup Island and the Railay/Phra Nang area, although the exact route can vary depending on the operator, tides and sea conditions. Along the way there are normally opportunities to swim, snorkel, relax on the beaches and see the huge limestone formations that make the Krabi coastline so distinctive. If you're visiting for the first time and deciding which of the best things to do in Krabi are actually worth fitting into your trip, this is one I'd definitely make time for. You can do the trip as part of an affordable group tour or pay more for a private longtail or speedboat if you want more flexibility.

If you want to book the Four Islands Tour in advance, this is the option I’d recommend. It’s a six hour longtail boat trip visiting Chicken Island, Koh Tup, Koh Poda and Phra Nang Cave Beach at Railay, with snorkelling, a Thai lunch and hotel transfers included.
What I particularly like is that you can choose between a shared tour or a private boat. I personally loved doing the Four Islands trip privately because we could enjoy the day at our own pace, but the shared option gives you a much cheaper way of seeing the same incredible part of Krabi.
With a 4.6/5 rating from almost 6,000 reviews, it also has a strong track record from travellers who have actually done the trip.
Explore Railay Beach & Phra Nang Beach
Railay is still one of my favourite places I've ever visited in Thailand, so this was always going to be high on my list of the best things to do in Krabi. I first stayed here on my original trip around Thailand and loved it enough that when one of my best friends later came over from England, I made sure we came back so I could show him the place I'd been going on about. I've now experienced Railay both as somewhere to stay and as a day trip and I'd happily go back again.
Even if you're staying in Ao Nang and don't want to spend a night here, I'd still put aside at least half a day to explore Railay. For me, visiting Railay is easily one of the best things to do in Krabi even if you're only there for the day. Walk around Railay West, head across to Phra Nang Beach and Phra Nang Cave, wander through the little streets and bars and just take in the huge limestone cliffs surrounding you. There are also rock climbing routes and the famous Railay viewpoint for anyone wanting something more active. Railay has no road connection because of the surrounding cliffs, so you arrive by longtail boat, which is part of the experience itself.

📍 Planning to Visit Yourself?
This is one I wouldn't bother booking a tour for. If you're staying in Ao Nang, head down to the beach and find the official longtail boat ticket office. The current shared fare is 100 THB per person each way and the journey to Railay West takes around 10 - 15 minutes. Boats generally leave once enough passengers have gathered rather than following a strict timetable, so during quieter periods you may need to wait a little.
You can buy a return ticket and spend the day exploring Railay at your own pace. Just check the current return times at the ticket office before leaving Ao Nang, as normal daytime services generally run until around 6pm and conditions can affect departures. I'd also wear something you don't mind getting wet because the longtails normally drop you directly onto the beach rather than at a proper pier.
Kayaking Through Ao Thalane Mangrove Forest
I did a kayaking trip in Krabi with my friend when he came over to Thailand and we both loved it. After spending plenty of our trip around beaches and islands, getting into a kayak and exploring a quieter side of Krabi was a really nice change. Being down at water level with the huge limestone scenery around you makes it feel completely different from seeing Krabi from a boat or scooter.
It’s also a good activity if you actually want to do something rather than spend another day lying on a beach. There’s a bit of effort involved and you’ll definitely know you’ve been paddling by the end of it, but that was part of what we enjoyed. For me, kayaking easily deserves a place among the best things to do in Krabi, particularly if you enjoy being outdoors.
Ao Thalane is one of Krabi’s best known kayaking areas, around 30 km northwest of Krabi Town. The area is made up of mangrove forests, narrow waterways, limestone canyons, caves and lagoons, making it much more interesting than simply paddling across open water. If you're putting together your own list of the best things to do in Krabi, this is a great way to see a completely different side of the area. Wildlife can include macaques, kingfishers, herons and other animals living around the mangroves, although sightings obviously aren't guaranteed.

If you want to try kayaking in Krabi, this is the Ao Thalane tour I’d recommend. The trip takes you through the mangrove forest and limestone waterways, with opportunities to explore lagoons, caves and look out for wildlife along the way.
The tour lasts around 4.5 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop off, kayaking equipment, an English speaking guide, drinking water, fruit and lunch. It currently has a 4.6/5 rating from more than 2,300 reviews, which gives me plenty of confidence recommending it.
You do need a reasonable level of fitness as you'll be doing the paddling yourself. However, the tour also offers a guide assisted option for an additional fee if you want the experience without doing all of the rowing.
Explore Krabi’s Best Viewpoints
One of my favourite viewpoints I've found around Krabi is Kuan Nom Saow Restaurant and Viewpoint. My partner and I rode up there on the scooter and the views from the top were absolutely worth the journey. We stopped at the restaurant for some food, which was really good, while my partner had a fresh coconut and we just sat for a while enjoying the views. It’s also where I got one of my favourite viewpoint photos from that trip and easily makes exploring Krabi's viewpoints one of the best things to do in Krabi for me.
One thing I would say is that the ride up isn't the easiest on a scooter. Parts of the route are steep and you need to be confident controlling a bike, particularly on the way back down. If you're driving yourself, take your time, make sure you're comfortable with the conditions and don't feel pressured to rush. If you're not confident riding a scooter in Thailand, I'd look at another way of getting there rather than attempting it just for the viewpoint.
Krabi has plenty of viewpoints beyond Kuan Nom Saow, ranging from places you can reach relatively easily to proper hikes. Din Daeng Doi is a popular option for sunrise and panoramic views across Krabi's limestone landscape, while Dragon's Crest, also known as Khao Ngon Nak, is for anyone wanting something considerably more challenging. The Dragon's Crest trail involves a proper hike through the forest before reaching the viewpoints, so I'd treat that as an activity in itself rather than a quick photo stop.

Kuan Nom Saow Restaurant and Viewpoint is the one I'd personally recommend because I've actually been there and really enjoyed it. You don't just ride up, take a photo and immediately leave either. Having the restaurant at the top means you can order some food or a drink and actually sit down and enjoy the scenery for a while.
The combination of the views, good food and relaxed atmosphere made the journey up worthwhile for us. If you're exploring Krabi independently and you're confident on a scooter, it's a great place to add to your route.
Climb Tiger Cave Temple
I haven't made it to Tiger Cave Temple yet despite visiting Krabi multiple times, but it's firmly on my list for a future trip. I've heard plenty about the climb and the views waiting at the top and it looks like one of those experiences where you have to put some effort in to properly enjoy it. With so many of my previous Krabi trips revolving around the beaches and islands, this is one of the inland experiences I still want to tick off and potentially one of the best things to do in Krabi if you want to get away from the coastline for a day.
Tiger Cave Temple, locally known as Wat Tham Suea, is one of Krabi's best known temples and is famous for the steep climb to its mountaintop viewpoint. More than 1,200 steps lead towards the summit, where you'll find a huge golden Buddha and panoramic views across Krabi's limestone mountains and countryside. The climb can be physically demanding, particularly in the heat, so take plenty of water, wear suitable shoes and consider visiting earlier in the morning when temperatures are generally cooler. It's an active Buddhist temple, so shoulders and knees should also be covered when visiting.

If you'd rather turn your visit into a full day exploring inland Krabi, this is the tour I'd recommend looking at. It combines Tiger Cave Temple with the Emerald Pool, Blue Pool and Krabi Hot Springs, giving you a completely different day from the beaches, islands and boat trips that make up much of a Krabi holiday.
The tour lasts around 9 - 9.5 hours and is limited to a small group of up to nine people. It currently has a 4.8/5 rating from more than 4,000 reviews, with transport, a guide and entry fees included according to the selected booking option.
I haven't done this particular tour myself, but I like the combination. I didn't think the Emerald Pool or Hot Springs needed their own places in my top 10 best things to do in Krabi, but combining them with Tiger Cave Temple makes for a really good inland day if you want to experience more than the coastline.

You don't need to join a tour to visit Tiger Cave Temple. If you have your own transport or are happy arranging a taxi, you can visit independently and take the climb at your own pace.
I'd personally aim for the morning rather than tackling more than 1,200 steps during the hottest part of the afternoon. Take plenty of water and don't underestimate the climb. You should also dress respectfully for the temple by covering your shoulders and knees.
Explore the Hong Islands
My partner has actually beaten me to the Hong Islands. Despite visiting Krabi multiple times myself, it's one trip I still haven't managed to do, but she went without me and absolutely loved it. She had the best time exploring the islands and came back with some incredible videos of the scenery, including the one I've added to this page. Seeing her videos and hearing how much she enjoyed the day has made me want to visit even more.
I've already done the Four Islands Tour and loved it, so the Hong Islands are firmly on my list for one of my next trips to Krabi. From my partner's experience and everything I've researched since, I think they easily deserve a place among the best things to do in Krabi. It's also somewhere I'm looking forward to experiencing for myself rather than pretending I've already ticked everything off the list.
The Hong Islands sit within Than Bok Khorani National Park and are known for their limestone cliffs, clear water, beaches and the enclosed Hong Lagoon. A typical day trip centres around Koh Hong itself, where you can swim, relax on the beach and climb to the 360 degree viewpoint, before visiting the lagoon and some of the smaller surrounding islands. Depending on the tour, you can also snorkel, kayak and visit places such as Lao Lading and Pak Bia.

If you're looking to visit the Hong Islands, this is the day trip I'd recommend. It travels by speedboat from the Krabi area and gives you plenty of time on Hong Island itself, alongside Hong Lagoon, Lao Lading and Pak Bia.
One of the biggest attractions for me is the 360 degree viewpoint on Hong Island. You can also add kayaking if you want a more active day, while swimming, snorkelling and lunch are worked into the trip as well.
The tour currently has a 4.6/5 rating from more than 4,600 reviews and recent travellers particularly praise the organisation, guides and amount of time given at the different stops. Hotel transfers are available from several of Krabi's main tourist areas, making it a straightforward full day trip.
Spend a Day & Evening Exploring Ao Nang
I've stayed in Ao Nang on multiple trips and some of my favourite days haven't involved booking anything at all. My partner and I have hired a scooter and just headed out exploring, stopping at local beaches, viewpoints and anywhere else that looked interesting along the way. Even simply riding some of the roads around Krabi and taking in the limestone scenery can make for a brilliant day, especially when you're not rushing between attractions.
Ao Nang is just as enjoyable once the sun goes down. We've spent evenings moving between different bars, playing pool, listening to live music and seeing where the night takes us. We also went to Blue Dragon Cabaret at Ao Nang Center Point, which was something completely different. It's a proper cabaret performance with elaborate costumes, dancing and music. Afterwards you're already in one of Ao Nang's main nightlife areas if you want to carry on with the evening.
Ao Nang is Krabi's main tourist hub, but I think it's worth spending some time actually enjoying the area rather than only using it as somewhere to sleep between tours. You have the beach, restaurants, shops and bars around the centre, while having your own transport opens up beaches, viewpoints and quieter roads around the surrounding area. Once evening arrives, the beachfront and nightlife areas become much livelier, with everything from relaxed bars and live music to late night venues. Spending a full day and evening exploring Ao Nang is easily one of the best things to do in Krabi when you want a day without following an organised itinerary.

🌴 How I'd Spend The Day
I wouldn't over plan this one. Start around Ao Nang and head out exploring the surrounding area, stopping at beaches, viewpoints or somewhere for food whenever you fancy it. Some of our best stops have simply come from seeing somewhere interesting while riding around and deciding to pull over.
Later in the afternoon, head back towards Ao Nang Beach, grab something to eat and stick around for sunset. Once it gets dark, I'd walk around and see which bars take your fancy rather than deciding beforehand exactly where you're spending the night. You'll find everything from relaxed places for a drink and a game of pool to live music and much livelier late night venues.
If you're exploring by scooter like we did, only ride if you're properly licensed, insured and confident on Thai roads.
🎭 Blue Dragon Cabaret
One evening my partner and I went to Blue Dragon Cabaret at Ao Nang Center Point and really enjoyed it. If you've never been to a Thai cabaret show before, expect colourful costumes, music, dancing and performers putting on a proper stage show. It's entertaining rather than sexual, so don't confuse it with some of Thailand's more adult nightlife.
It's also in a great position for continuing your night afterwards. Center Point has bars and other nightlife around it, so we watched the show and then carried on exploring Ao Nang rather than treating it as the entire evening.

You don't need a tour or itinerary to enjoy Ao Nang. That's actually what I like about this recommendation. Give yourself a free day, explore during daylight, come back towards the beachfront for sunset and then see where the evening takes you.
Try Rock Climbing at Railay Beach
I've spent plenty of time around Railay and I've climbed the steep route up towards the famous viewpoint, which involves a fair bit of scrambling and using your hands, but I've never actually tried proper rock climbing on the limestone cliffs. Considering Railay is one of my favourite places in Thailand, it's definitely something I'd like to do on a future visit. Looking up at the cliffs while you're there, you quickly understand why climbing has become such a big part of Railay.
If you're looking for something more adventurous than another day on the beach, rock climbing has to be one of the best things to do in Krabi. Railay is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs and has climbing routes for different experience levels, including complete beginners. You don't need to arrive knowing what you're doing either, as local climbing schools offer introductory sessions where instructors teach you the basic techniques, equipment and safety before taking you onto suitable routes.

If I was booking my first proper climbing experience at Railay, this is the one I'd choose. It's a four hour introductory session with Real Rocks Climbing School and you can choose between a morning or afternoon class.
The climbing takes place around Railay and Phra Nang Beach, with an instructor teaching you climbing techniques, how to use the equipment and the safety basics before taking you onto routes suitable for your ability.
It currently has an excellent 4.9/5 rating from more than 700 reviews, with recent travellers particularly praising the instructors and their focus on safety. All the climbing equipment is included, and hotel pickup and drop off are available from areas including Ao Nang, Klong Hang and Ao Nam Mao.
I haven't done this particular experience myself, but having already tackled the Railay viewpoint route and spent plenty of time around these cliffs, proper rock climbing is something I'd really like to try next time.
Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
One of the highlights of my first trip to Thailand was visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. It was the first time I'd ever seen elephants in person and they're even more incredible than I imagined. Watching these gentle animals roam, feed and interact with each other was something I'll never forget. Since then, I've visited a couple of ethical elephant sanctuaries in different parts of Thailand and every experience has been just as memorable.
Unfortunately, I've also unknowingly stopped at an unethical elephant attraction near Lampang while taking a break from driving and it was genuinely upsetting to see how the elephants were being treated. That experience made me appreciate even more how important it is to properly research where you're visiting and choose somewhere that puts the animals welfare first.
If you're looking for the best things to do in Krabi, visiting a responsible elephant sanctuary can be an unforgettable addition to your trip. There are multiple elephant experiences around Krabi, but I wouldn't choose one simply because it uses the word "sanctuary". Look for places that don't offer elephant riding, tricks or performances and instead focus on observing the elephants, learning about their individual stories and supporting their ongoing care. Welfare practices can change, so I always recommend checking exactly what an experience involves before booking.

I'm deliberately not recommending one particular elephant sanctuary here. Instead, I've linked to the current elephant experiences available in Krabi so you can compare them and choose one you're comfortable supporting.
Don't rely entirely on ratings either. Read the activity description and recent reviews and check what interaction with the elephants actually takes place. Personally, I'd avoid anywhere offering riding, tricks or performances and I'd favour experiences centered around observing, feeding where appropriate, education and allowing the elephants to behave as naturally as possible.

Rain doesn't necessarily ruin a trip to Krabi, but boat trips and outdoor activities can be affected by bad weather and rough sea conditions. On wetter days, I'd keep your plans flexible, explore Ao Nang, find somewhere good to eat or relax and move your island trips to a better weather day if possible.
