Best day trips from Chiang Mai

My Personal Recommendation

If you're visiting Chiang Mai for the first time, I'd recommend setting aside at least one or two days to explore outside the city. Some of my favourite experiences in northern Thailand have been visiting places like Doi Inthanon National Park, climbing the Sticky Waterfalls and exploring the mountain village of Mae Kampong. These are some of the best day trips from Chiang Mai and offer a completely different experience from the temples, markets and busy streets of the Old City.

One place I always find myself returning to is Doi Inthanon. I've visited the national park on numerous trips to Chiang Mai and it's become a bit of a tradition to stop at the same waterfall and take a photo in the exact same spot every time. The mountain scenery is incredible and it's somewhere I'd happily recommend to anyone visiting northern Thailand. Whether you decide to hire a car, book an organised tour or arrange a local songthaew, getting out of Chiang Mai and exploring the surrounding countryside is something I really think is worth doing.

My Favourite Day Trips From Chiang Mai

From beautiful mountain temples and national parks to waterfalls and peaceful villages, there's so much to explore beyond Chiang Mai itself. These are six of the best day trips from Chiang Mai that I think are worth adding to your itinerary. I've visited most of these places myself over the years and each one offers something a little different.

Doi Suthep and Doi Pui Chiang Mai, Best day trips from Chiang Mai

Doi Suthep and Doi Pui

Doi Suthep was one of the first places my girlfriend wanted to show me in Chiang Mai. We drove up the mountain together so she could visit the temple and pray. It's a beautiful place and somewhere that really gives you a chance to experience Thailand's Buddhist culture. The temple itself is impressive with its golden decorations and peaceful atmosphere. The views looking out over Chiang Mai are also incredible. I'd definitely recommend making the journey up the mountain, even if you're only visiting for a few days.

If you're looking for the best day trips from Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is one of the easiest places to start. Located in the mountains just outside the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most important Buddhist temples. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, admire the famous golden chedi and enjoy fantastic views across Chiang Mai. You can also continue further into the mountains to visit Doi Pui Hmong Village, where you'll find traditional handicrafts, small shops and beautiful mountain scenery. It's a great option for anyone wanting to experience some of Chiang Mai's culture without travelling too far from the city.

If you'd rather visit Doi Suthep without arranging your own transport, this four hour guided tour is a great option. You'll visit the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple before continuing into the mountains to explore a Hmong village near Doi Pui. It's a convenient way to experience the beautiful mountain scenery and learn more about the area's Buddhist culture and local traditions with a guide.

πŸ“ Planning to Visit Yourself?

Doi Suthep is located in the mountains west of Chiang Mai and is around a 30 to 45 minute drive from the Old City, depending on traffic. You can get there by car, arrange a songthaew or book an organised tour. The road winds up through the mountains, so take your time if you're driving yourself. If you're planning to visit Doi Pui as well, allow extra time to explore the village and surrounding scenery.

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls Chiang Mai, Best day trips from Chiang Mai

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls

I've visited the Sticky Waterfalls twice now and it's easily one of the most enjoyable day trips I've done around Chiang Mai. My first visit was with a group of travellers I met through a Hostelworld group chat. We hired a songthaew for the day and visited both the Sticky Waterfalls and Angel Waterfall Park. I enjoyed it so much that I returned another January with my girlfriend and two friends who were visiting Thailand. Climbing up the waterfalls is great fun and something a little different from your usual sightseeing. Just be careful where you put your feet because some areas of the rocks can still be slippery.

If you're looking for the best day trips from Chiang Mai, Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. Located in the Sri Lanna National Park area, these waterfalls are famous for their unusual limestone rocks that provide plenty of grip underfoot. Unlike most waterfalls where the rocks are extremely slippery, visitors can actually climb up sections of the flowing water. There are ropes to help along some of the steeper sections and multiple levels to explore. It's a fantastic place to spend a few hours surrounded by nature and is especially popular with travellers looking for something a little more adventurous outside Chiang Mai.

You'll have time to experience the unusual limestone waterfalls and enjoy the scenery at Angel Waterfall Park. It's a convenient choice for anyone wanting to visit both locations in one trip.

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls is located around 60 kilometres north of Chiang Mai and usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half to reach by car. You can drive yourself, arrange a private songthaew or book an organised tour. I'd recommend bringing swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes if you're planning to climb the waterfalls. Take your time on the rocks and use the ropes where provided. Save the location in Google Maps before leaving Chiang Mai, especially if you're travelling independently.

Mae Kampong Village

Mae Kampong is another place I've visited with my girlfriend and somewhere I'd definitely recommend if you want to escape the busy streets of Chiang Mai for a few hours. We drove there together and spent our time walking around the village, enjoying some food and taking in the beautiful surroundings. It's a really nice place to explore without having to rush around or plan too much. The mountain scenery is lovely and the whole village has a relaxed atmosphere. Sometimes it's nice to just get out of the city and enjoy somewhere a little quieter.

Located in the mountains east of the city, this traditional village is known for its wooden houses, small cafΓ©s, local restaurants and beautiful forest scenery. Mae Kampong Village is located around 50 kilometres east of Chiang Mai and usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half to reach by car. The journey takes you through some beautiful countryside before climbing into the mountains. You can drive yourself or arrange private transport from Chiang Mai. Once you arrive, the village is best explored on foot, with plenty of small cafΓ©s, restaurants and local shops to discover. I'd recommend arriving earlier in the day, especially on weekends when the village can become quite busy.

Mon Jam

Mon Jam is somewhere I haven't managed to visit myself yet, but my girlfriend has been and really enjoyed it. She's told me how beautiful the area is and it's definitely somewhere I'd like to explore when I'm back in Chiang Mai. The mountain scenery looks incredible, with colourful flower gardens, countryside cafΓ©s and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding hills. It looks like a lovely place to spend a few hours away from the city, especially if you enjoy photography or just want somewhere peaceful to relax and enjoy the views.

If you're looking for the best day trips from Chiang Mai, Mon Jam is another destination worth considering. Located in the mountains of Mae Rim District, Mon Jam is known for its scenic viewpoints, colourful flower gardens and cooler mountain climate. The area has become popular for its hillside cafΓ©s, gardens and places to enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. Many visitors combine Mon Jam with other attractions around Mae Rim, making it a good choice for a relaxing day outside Chiang Mai. The final part of the journey follows winding mountain roads, so it's worth taking your time if you're driving yourself. You can also arrange a private driver or book an organised tour from Chiang Mai. I'd recommend visiting earlier in the morning when the weather is cooler and the views are often clearer. Save the location in Google Maps before setting off, especially if you're planning to explore several attractions around Mae Rim.

Doi Inthanon National Park Chiang Mai, Best day trips from Chiang Mai, Where to stay in Thailand

Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon is one of my favourite places to visit around Chiang Mai and somewhere I've returned to almost every time I've been in northern Thailand. My first visit was with a group of travellers I'd met through Hostelworld and I've since driven back up the mountain with friends on other trips. One thing that's become a bit of a tradition is stopping at the same waterfall on the way down and taking a photo in exactly the same spot every time. The mountain scenery is beautiful and the famous twin pagodas are incredible to see in person. It's somewhere I never seem to get bored of visiting and I'd happily go back again.

If you're looking for the best day trips from Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon National Park should definitely be on your list. Home to Thailand's highest mountain at 2,565 metres above sea level, the park is famous for its beautiful waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and cooler temperatures. One of the main attractions is the Royal Twin Pagodas, surrounded by landscaped gardens with fantastic views across the mountains. Visitors can also explore nature trails, visit the summit and stop at impressive waterfalls such as Wachirathan Waterfall. Doi Inthanon National Park is located around 90 kilometres southwest of Chiang Mai, although reaching the main mountain attractions takes roughly two hours by car. The roads are generally well maintained but become steep and winding as you climb higher into the mountains. I'd recommend leaving Chiang Mai early so you have plenty of time to explore the pagodas, viewpoints and waterfalls without rushing. Temperatures can be surprisingly cold near the summit, especially during the cooler months, so bringing a jumper or light jacket is a good idea. Save the main attractions in Google Maps before setting off, as the national park covers a large area.

Chiang Rai Temples, Best day trips from Chiang Mai

Chiang Rai Temples

The White Temple in Chiang Rai was somewhere I'd wanted to visit for a long time. I finally got the chance when I spent a few days in Chiang Rai with my girlfriend and her family. The architecture is absolutely fascinating and unlike anything else I've seen in Thailand. The amount of detail that has gone into the temple is incredible and it's one of those places that really stands out when you see it in person. Although I visited while staying in Chiang Rai rather than travelling from Chiang Mai for the day, I honestly think it's worth making the journey just to see the White Temple.

If you're looking for the best day trips from Chiang Mai and don't mind a longer journey, Chiang Rai is a fantastic destination to consider. The city is famous for its unique temples, particularly Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple. This extraordinary attraction features detailed white sculptures, mirrored decorations and unusual artwork created by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Another popular attraction is Wat Rong Suea Ten, known as the Blue Temple, which is famous for its striking blue interior and beautiful Buddhist artwork. Many organised day trips also include other attractions around Chiang Rai, making it possible to experience many of the area's famous landmarks in one day.

Chiang Rai is located around 190 kilometres northeast of Chiang Mai and usually takes around three to four hours to reach by car, depending on traffic and road conditions. You can drive yourself, take a bus or book an organised day trip. If you're planning to visit independently, I'd recommend leaving Chiang Mai very early to make the most of your time. The White Temple is located just outside Chiang Rai city, while the Blue Temple is further north. Personally, I think staying overnight in Chiang Rai is a better option if you have the time, as it allows you to explore the temples without spending most of your day travelling.

From choosing the right neighbourhood to discovering temples, markets, restaurants and local attractions, these guides will help you make the most of your time in Chiang Mai.

What are the best day trips from Chiang Mai?

Some of the best day trips from Chiang Mai include Doi Inthanon National Park, Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls, Doi Suthep, Mae Kampong Village, Mon Jam and the famous temples of Chiang Rai. Each destination offers something different, from mountain scenery and waterfalls to Buddhist temples and traditional villages.

I'd personally recommend Doi Inthanon National Park for anyone visiting Chiang Mai for the first time. It's one of my favourite places in northern Thailand and somewhere I've returned to multiple times. The beautiful mountain scenery, Royal Twin Pagodas and impressive waterfalls make it a fantastic full day out.

Yes, Chiang Rai is one of the longer day trips from Chiang Mai, but it's definitely possible. The journey usually takes around three to four hours each way, so expect a long day of travelling. Organised tours often visit the famous White Temple and Blue Temple. If you have more time available, I'd recommend staying overnight in Chiang Rai instead.

Doi Inthanon National Park is located around 90 kilometres southwest of Chiang Mai. Reaching the main mountain attractions usually takes around two hours by car. I'd recommend leaving early in the morning so you have plenty of time to visit the Royal Twin Pagodas, mountain viewpoints and waterfalls before returning to the city.

Absolutely! I've visited Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls twice and really enjoyed both trips. The unusual limestone rocks allow you to climb directly up sections of the flowing water, making it a completely different experience from a normal waterfall visit. It's great fun, although some areas can still be slippery, so take your time when climbing.

Yes, many of the best day trips from Chiang Mai can be done independently. Hiring a car or bike gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, while a private driver or songthaew can be a convenient alternative. I've personally driven to numerous of these destinations and also hired a songthaew with other travellers to visit the Sticky Waterfalls.

Doi Inthanon National Park and Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls are two of my favourite choices for nature lovers. Doi Inthanon offers beautiful mountain scenery, waterfalls and walking trails, while the Sticky Waterfalls provide a more adventurous experience. Mae Kampong Village and Mon Jam are also worth considering for their peaceful countryside surroundings and mountain views.

No, Doi Suthep can easily be visited in half a day. The temple is around 30 to 45 minutes from central Chiang Mai by car, depending on traffic. Many organised tours last around four hours and include a visit to a nearby Hmong village. It's a great choice if you want to experience Buddhist culture and beautiful mountain views without spending the whole day travelling.

November to February is generally one of the best times to explore the countryside around Chiang Mai. Temperatures are cooler and conditions are often more comfortable for visiting temples, villages and national parks. The rainy season brings greener scenery and impressive waterfalls, although some trails can become slippery. Between February and April, seasonal smoke can affect visibility and air quality around northern Thailand.

I'd recommend spending at least four to five days in Chiang Mai if you want to explore both the city and its surrounding attractions. This gives you time to visit the temples, markets and restaurants in the Old City while setting aside one or two days for places like Doi Inthanon, Sticky Waterfalls or Mae Kampong Village. If you have longer, there's plenty more to discover around northern Thailand.
